Tip for trips
Primaeval Forest Boubín
Close to the hill Boubín a sylvan complex spreads out there being a mixture of original fir-beech areas with spruce grove. It is known as a Primaeval Forest Boubín. After nationalization of Bohemian forests in 1933 the region was declared a State Nature Preserve. During the post-war period an area of the reserve changed several times, later on it has been extended by 666 hectares. The very heart is off limits to the public. Formerly, huge amounts of tourists visiting the place hardly damaged the roots of trees by treading them down. This caused the trees withered and succumbed to the wind and wood pests.
In 1979 a nature trail of Boubín primaeval forest was established passing along the Boubín's heart. It offers forest paths running along the most-preserved parts of the primaeval forest. The trail (about 5km long and with altitudinal difference of 190m) contains 9 stops where visitors are familiarized with fauna and flora of the region. A starting point is the Boubín little lake, also known as Little Lake by the Wildwood. It was artificially created on a stream of the Kaplický Brook. The pond served as a reservoir used for floating the wood from upper parts of Boubín. Its area accounts for 0,37hectares and is as much as 4m deep. Among the most interesting stops belong, for example, the Stilted Spruce, the King of Spruce or the Hunting Pavement.
Povydří (The Otter district)
Along the Vydra (The Otter) ist a nature trail has been established. It is 7km long and on its 12 stops it acquaints visitors with interesting places of this attractive region declared a nature preserve. On the bouldery bed in this part, the river creates mighty rapids and long cascades. You can see in stones scoured giant pots, huge rock massifs with rocking stone overhanging the riverbed. There are also numerous stone seas on scarps of the valley. The starting points for a walk are Antýgl and Čeňkova Pila.
Stožec
Approximately 6km south-west of Volary a hill called Stožec (1.065m) towers above the homonymous village. The granite hill, covered with a mixed forest, is a nature preserve. The protected part is also the original primaeval vegetation known as a primaeval forest Medvědice (A Dogberry) (with an area of 3 hectares). Under the peak there is a known Stožecká Rock. The last roost of falcons in the Southern Bohemia was discovered here. On the top of the rock you can find a metal cross and remains of a little castle from the 13th century. On the south-west hillside there stands a pilgrim chapel of the Virgin Mary. The chapel was built in the 18th century close to a healing spring.
Kašperk
North of the Kašperské Mountains. It is the highest situated royal castle in Bohemia (887m above the sea level). The castle affords beautiful panoramas of surroundings. It was founded by the king Charles IV. (after who it was also named Karlsberg). Kašperk became an outstanding support of the Royal power in Southern Bohemia. It is a destination not only for tourists but also for stage crews as Kašperk offers ideal conditions for shooting various fairy tales and movies (e.g. a well known Anděl Páně - the Lord's Angel).
Vimperk
History of the town begins in the middle ages. The inhabited place here was a castle established around 1260 under the reign of the King Přemysl Otakar II.
Among the most often visited attractions belongs the castle, built on a high hill in the middle of the 13th century. The castle precinct also includes a forward gunnery bastion Haselburg originated in 1479. It is a typical example of medieval fortifying architecture. You can also visit an interesting exhibition focused on history of Vimperk and Šumava region.
